Chennai music season.
Full elai sapadu. Kootu, akkarvadusal, kozhambu, more kozhambu, rasam, applam, usli, puliodarai, green pepper salad (yummm), sepam kazhangu roast :) - go figure. Or rather Google translate. And good luck with that.
So if you go only for the food at mylapore fine arts or any other sabha for that matter, you get disapproving uhuhs. But once you squirm past that, the rava pongal, idli, vadai, Poori, dosai ...all simply quintessential madras. And the coffee...the way god intended it to be.
Chennai people
I belong. Because they make me feel at home. I had a crisis. Am glad it was in chennai. Help is just a text away. Pragmatic and affectionate and non fussy and its just the way people are... A community. Relatives, friends, local computer repair guy, the canteen cashier... All except auto guys. Don't get me started on that.
Chennai must dos
Bajji on the beach- raw plantain ones
Sunrise on the beach - it really makes a memory, sky tries on different outfits and sun pops up to watch the show
Idli vadai dosai pongal - from anywhere anytime. I like breakfast time, when the little regular shops open. Try something you won't get anywhere else..like sevai or paniyaram.
Visit nalli or kumarans Saree shop in T nagar - you'll get the flavor of the people. Buy some silk
Theppa Kolam - the one in mylapore is really nice. Take a walk around the pond, around the temple, north and south mada streets. See the temple Theru ( carriage) .

Chennai hospitals.
Did you know they ask you to buy gloves with every billing at the pharmacy? Today, I bought 24 pairs. Yesterday, a modest 15. By the time of discharge, I calculated 195 pairs. No bare hands please. Everyone. Ever!
Chennai Rememberings
Madras :)
Ever heard of Buhari's? Drove past it and I have vague recollections of it being special
At that time, crabs and jellyfish and star fish would wash upon the beach.Woodlands used to be drive-in and we would have nela sapadu on the terrace on full moon nights. People had visiri vazhai in their gardens and a teak or rosewood oonjal swinging in the living room.
